Picking Up a Rental Car at Curacao Airport

The bottom line on airport pickup

Curacao International Airport, code CUR and known locally as Hato, sits on the north coast about 12 km from Willemstad. It is a small, single-terminal airport, and every local rental agency we compare offers some form of airport collection.

What differs is the mechanics. Some agencies keep an office next to the terminal. Some run a free shuttle to a car park a few minutes away. A couple deliver the car to your accommodation instead. Knowing which one you booked saves ten confused minutes in arrivals.

The three kinds of airport pickup

Office at or next to the airport. D&D Car Rental lists a Curacao International Airport office as a pickup location, and Boric Car Rental has its main office on F.D. Rooseveltweg, three to four minutes away. Dushi Rentals, Just Drive, Cars.cw, Ross, Right Side and United all list Curacao International Airport as a pickup point in their booking systems.

Free shuttle from the terminal. Around Curacao calls its option Free Private Airport Pickup. Boric runs a free shuttle bus from a platform outside arrivals. Just Drive meets you at the Car Rental Shuttle area and drives you to a car park about a minute away. United provides a complimentary shuttle from the airport and from the cruise terminal.

Delivery instead of collection. RR Car Rental cannot hand over cars at the terminal because of airport rules, so it runs a shuttle to its own delivery point and asks you to flag this at booking. Right Side offers pick-up and drop-off at any time and place. D&D delivers free anywhere outside the airport, with Westpunt the exception.

Finding your agency in arrivals

The car rental hall is straight ahead once you clear customs, and the shuttle pickup area is outside it. Boric publishes step-by-step directions: leave customs into arrivals, turn right, walk past the car rental area, continue about thirty feet, then cross the road to the shuttle platform.

The shuttle bays are shared, so look for the agency name on the vehicle or on a sign rather than for a branded desk. Most agencies here run on WhatsApp, and messaging them when you land is the quickest way to be found.

Give the agency your flight number when you book. RR Car Rental says it tracks arrivals with an online flight tracker on the day, so a delay does not cost you the booking. Others do the same informally.

Airport fees and after-hours arrivals

Most local agencies here do not add an airport surcharge. D&D is explicit about one: a one-time US $20 airport fee on rentals that start at the airport, with free delivery anywhere else on the island. SmartWheels notes an airport or hotel concession recovery fee on rentals that begin at those locations.

Opening hours decide what happens to a late flight. Just Drive runs 6am to 11:30pm every day, which covers almost every scheduled arrival. Around Curacao lists itself as open 24 hours. Boric covers 8am to 9pm at the airport shuttle area and the main office. Ross runs to 8pm on weekdays and 6pm at weekends. RR Car Rental handles airport pickups between 7:30am and 6pm only.

If you land outside your agency hours, the usual answer is a taxi to your accommodation and a delivery the next morning. Several agencies deliver free, so this often costs nothing beyond the one taxi ride. Agree it before you fly rather than at midnight in arrivals.

What to have ready

Your driver's license, a passport and a payment card. United Car Rental asks for a license and a passport specifically. MB-Equipment requires a valid category B license plus a passport for identification.

A card for the deposit. Amounts vary a lot: Around Curacao takes $350 at pickup, United $500 at 23 and over, Boric $500 rising to $572 for ages 23 to 25 and $1,000 if you decline their insurance. Just Drive takes no security deposit at all and SmartWheels advertises none, though its terms allow a credit hold.

Your booking confirmation and a WhatsApp-capable phone. Almost all communication with local Curacao agencies happens there, including handover instructions and any change to the meeting point.

Check the age rule before you travel. Around Curacao rents from 21, SmartWheels from 19 with a young driver fee, United from 21 with a larger deposit and all-risk insurance. Just Drive, United, Boric and RR set 23 as the standard minimum.

How far is your hotel

Willemstad is about 15 minutes from the airport on the main road. That covers Punda, Otrobanda and Pietermaai, though the Queen Juliana Bridge adds time in rush hour.

Mambo Beach and the Sea Aquarium area take roughly 25 minutes. Jan Thiel, the resort strip further east, is about 30 minutes.

Westpunt and the far western beaches are about 45 minutes. Piscadera Bay, closer in on the west side of the city, is a shorter run than Jan Thiel.

None of these drives is difficult, but the last one is worth doing in daylight the first time. The road west is unlit in stretches and goats wander onto it after dark.

Should you collect at the airport at all

If you are staying anywhere outside central Willemstad, yes. You need the car for the whole trip and the airport is where it is cheapest to start, especially with the agencies that charge nothing for airport collection.

If you are spending your first two nights in Punda or Pietermaai and only heading out later, a delivery to your accommodation on day three can be simpler. Parking in the old city is the one genuinely awkward part of driving here, and several agencies deliver at no charge.

Either way, book before you arrive. The local fleets here are small, several agencies list fewer than ten vehicle classes, and the cheapest cars go first in high season.
